DAILY ENCOUNTER
GOD IS MY REFUGE.
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah." Psalm 46:1-3
Glory to God! We have discussed the call to be still and know that God is God. Today, we go back to the beginning of the same thought from the scripture Psalms 46 to see the foundation of that stillness. It says, 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.' The psalmist doesn't say God is a refuge for people who are never in trouble; it says He is a help in trouble. The Bible never promised us a life without storms, but it promised us a God who is present in them. The word 'refuge' speaks of a place of safety, a shelter we can run to when danger comes. Strength speaks of power to endure. And the phrase 'very present help' means He is not far away or hard to reach; He is right there, available at every moment. You do not need an appointment or special words to reach Him. The moment you call, He answers. So many times, when trouble comes, we start by calling friends, relatives, and everybody we think can help, and God becomes the last option. But the psalmist teaches us that He is the first place to run to. Think of a child who falls while playing; the first word is usually 'Mummy!' or 'Daddy!', because the child knows who can help. A refuge is of no use if you do not run into it.
Then the psalmist describes the worst-case scenario: the earth removed, mountains carried into the midst of the sea, and the waters roaring and being troubled. These are pictures of everything that is supposed to be stable becoming unstable. Think about it: if the earth itself gives way, what else can you hold on to? But notice the conclusion: 'Therefore will not we fear.' Our fearlessness is not based on our strength but on the eternal nature of God. We do not fear because He is our refuge and strength. Our confidence is not in the situation being safe; it is in who God is. Daniel had every reason to fear in the den of lions, yet he came out without a scratch because God sent His angel and shut the lions' mouths. David hid in the cave of Adullam, but he made it a place of prayer. Your trouble, whether it is financial, health-related, or emotional, is not bigger than your refuge. David himself had many reasons to be afraid, with Saul hunting him and enemies all around, yet he kept coming back to God as his hiding place. Refuge is not an idea; it is a Person. Run to Him today. Do not wait until you feel strong enough; run as you are. Say it out loud: 'God is my refuge and my strength.' Do not let the storm shape your confession; let your confession shape your response to the storm. Whatever shakes, He remains. You are safe in Him. Hallelujah!!!
