THE JOY OF THE LORD

"Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our LORD: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength." Nehemiah 8:10

Glory to God! Joy is one of the fruits of the Spirit. It is a stream that flows from the fountain of God's life. Every believer has that fountain of joy within. From our opening scripture, Nehemiah had just completed the wall of Jerusalem, and while all the people gathered in the square before the Water Gate. Ezra the priest read the book of the law to them from morning until midday, and the people listened attentively. As the Word of God was read and explained, something broke in them. They began to weep. They had been in exile, they had neglected the law of God, and now they saw how far they had drifted. They were convicted and began to grieve. But Nehemiah, Ezra, and the Levites told them, 'This day is holy unto the LORD your God; mourn not, nor weep.' This is it; it was not wrong to feel sorrow for sin, but God did not want them to remain in that place. Conviction is meant to bring us to repentance, not to keep us in condemnation. He wanted them to move from weeping to rejoicing, because God's forgiveness had already been provided. A man who cannot move from sorrow to joy will always live under the weight of what God has already forgiven. Repentance opens the door, but joy walks in through it.

Joy is not the same as happiness. Happiness depends on what is happening around you, but the joy of the Lord depends on who is in you. It is a deep confidence in God that remains even when circumstances are difficult. Notice that the joy is called your strength. A joyless believer is a weak believer. When you lose your joy, you lose your strength to fight, to serve, and to stand. That is why the enemy works so hard to steal it. Think about it: when a person has no joy, small problems feel like mountains, and the work of God feels like a burden. But when joy is full, we can carry heavy loads and still smile. And look at what happened afterwards: the people went away to eat, to drink, to send portions, and to make abundant mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them. Joy follows understanding. The more you understand what God has done for you, the more joy you will have. So, do not let your situation determine your joy. Joy is a decision to look at God more than at the problem. Rejoice in who God is, and what He has given to you through Jesus Christ, and let His joy be your strength today. Hallelujah!!!
