DAILY ENCOUNTER
ABIDING IN THE VINE
"Abide in me, and
I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the
vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the
branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much
fruit: for without me ye can do nothing." John 15:4-5
Glory to God! We have
been looking at what it means to draw near to God, and today, our Lord Jesus takes us
from visiting to dwelling. He says, 'Abide in me.' To abide means to remain, to
stay, to make your home. The Christian life is not meant to be lived from a
distance. It is not about dropping in when you have a problem and leaving when
it is over; it is about a continual, dwelling relationship with Him. Jesus
spoke these words on the night before He was crucified, and He used a picture
that His disciples could easily understand: a vine and its branches. The branch
has one job, which is to stay connected to the vine. It does not strain,
struggle, or shout to produce grapes. The fruit is simply the result of the
life of the vine flowing through the branch. This is a great relief for those
of us who are tired from trying to produce results by our own efforts. Jesus
said, 'As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself.' It cannot! Not by effort,
not by wishing, not by religious activity. No matter how much it tries, a branch
that is disconnected will never bear a single grape. In the same way, the
character we desire, the answers we are waiting for, the fulfilment of our
purpose, and the impact we make are not products of our hard work alone, but of
our connection to Him. The vine supplies; the branch simply receives.
Many people try to fix
their lives by working harder, but Jesus said, 'Without me ye can do nothing.'
Nothing! Not a little, not something small, but nothing. That does not mean we
should stop working; it means that our work must flow from our union with Him.
A branch cut from the vine does not die immediately; it may stay green for a
few days and look fine. But the sap is no longer flowing, and sooner or later
it will show. Many believers look fine on the outside, with busy schedules,
active ministries, and good plans, but their connection with the vine is
gradually weakening, and the life that makes things last is no longer flowing.
So how do we abide? Jesus tells us later in the chapter: by letting His words
abide in us, by obeying His commands, and by remaining in His love. In other
words, through the Word, prayer, obedience, and a heart that stays close to Him
daily. Make Him your home, not just your help in times of need. Let your
decisions, your plans, and your pursuits come out of your time with Him, not
the other way round. Stay connected, and the life of the vine will flow through
you, and you will bear much fruit. Fruit that remains is the natural result of
staying where life is. Apart from Him, nothing; with Him, everything!
Hallelujah!!!

REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- Am
I abiding in Christ daily, or am I only coming to Him when I need help?
- In what areas of my life have I
been depending on my own effort instead of drawing life from Christ?
