THANKSGIVING IS UNDERSTANDING

"In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Glory to God! Welcome to the tenth month of the year. God has been good to us. It will be great for you to take out some time today to truly bless the Lord for the last nine months and how He has graciously brought us into the new month. Glory to God! It takes understanding to truly be thankful to God. When dealing with men, one can practically tell what they are doing by what they see them do in practical terms, but many times we don't see what God is doing until He is done doing it. So it takes an understanding of who God is and His heart for us in order to be truly thankful to Him. Let's take Joseph, for example. How will he have known that his brothers selling him to slavery will lead him to the fulfilment of his dreams? How will he know that the pit and prison will lead to the throne? He couldn't have known. You can be in a season where you can't understand anything that God is doing; can you still be willing to give thanks? Our opening scripture admonishes us to give thanks in everything. But is that possible? It is easy to say 'give thanks' when you are not experiencing the negative in everything; it is easy to say 'give thanks' when you have not lost your job with nothing to fall back on. That is why without understanding, it is difficult to give thanks.

As believers, our anchor is not on what we can see but on who we can see. If we put our attention on things, we can miss the one who owns the things. Many of the reasons why a lot of people miss God in their pursuit are because they are often more concerned about what He can give than who He is. Understanding comes when we truly know who God is. Knowing who God is will cause us to be grateful even when we don't know what He is doing. That is why we must give ourselves to developing our personal relationship with God through the study of His Word and prayers every day. Until we know Him, we can't come into the understanding that produces thanksgiving. When Joseph stood at the fulfilment of his dreams, he understood that in the midst of everything he went through, God was working for his good to bring him to the place of destiny and to save a lot of lives. Most times the end justifies the means. The means might not be great, but it is fulfilling a purpose. This month, practise thanksgiving from the place of understanding, and you will find yourself fulfilling God's will for your life. Do not give place to murmuring, do not give place to complaining, but rather give place to thanksgiving. You may not know what God is doing, but you understand who He is, and that is all that matters. His purpose for your life shall come to pass. Glorayyyy! Hallelujah!!!

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. Can I identify situations where I did not understand what God was doing at the time but later discovered that He was working for my good?
  2. What can I intentionally thank God for today, even though I may not yet understand everything He is doing?
