SPEAK IN TONGUES

"For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries." 1 Corinthians 14:2

Glory to God! Speaking in tongues is one of the supernatural provisions God has given to the believer for living and functioning in the Spirit. It is not a strange practice reserved for a select few; it is a spiritual language through which the believer communicates with God and engages spiritual realities. The origin of speaking in tongues is from God. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He spoke about the signs that would accompany those who believe in Him. He said, “And these signs shall follow them that believe... they shall speak with new tongues” (Mark 16:17). Speaking in tongues, therefore, was part of the promise of Jesus concerning the believer. It was not invented by the early Church; it was spoken of by Jesus and manifested when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Day of Pentecost. The disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Tongues is the language of the Spirit. It gives us the ability to communicate with God beyond the limitations of our natural language and natural understanding. When we pray in tongues, our spirit is communicating with God. Paul said, “For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth” (1 Corinthians 14:14). This is why speaking in tongues is so important to the believer. There are many spirits operating in the spiritual realm. Scripture reveals the existence of angels, evil spirits, and other spiritual beings. We therefore cannot afford to live only from the standpoint of our physical senses and natural understanding. As believers, we have been born of the Spirit and must learn to live from the Spirit. Speaking in tongues is one of the ways we exercise ourselves in the realm of the Spirit and maintain fellowship with God.

There are reasons why every believer should speak in tongues frequently. Speaking in tongues enables us to communicate effectively with God. Our natural languages are human languages. English, French, Hausa, Yoruba, German, and every other natural language belong to the realm of human communication. But there is also spiritual communication. When we pray in tongues, the Holy Spirit gives our spirit utterance to communicate with God. Our opening scripture says, "For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God." Notice that the direction of this communication is toward God. You are speaking unto God. God understands every human language, but speaking in tongues is not dependent upon the limitations of human language. It is Spirit-enabled communication. When we pray in tongues, we are not trying to communicate with God through the limitations of our vocabulary, intellect, or natural understanding. We are yielding our spirit to the Holy Spirit and allowing Him to give us utterance. This is particularly important because there are things concerning our lives, God's purposes, and spiritual realities that our natural understanding cannot adequately articulate. When we pray in tongues, we can speak “mysteries” in the spirit. We can communicate with God concerning things we may not even know how to express naturally. This is why we must develop the habit of praying in tongues. We should not only speak in tongues during church services or special prayer meetings. We should speak in tongues privately, consistently, and deliberately. It is a powerful means of maintaining our fellowship with God. As we pray in the Spirit, our spirit becomes increasingly sensitive to God, our mind becomes increasingly aligned with His thoughts, and we walk with greater clarity in His will and purpose for our lives. Speak in tongues. Live in the Spirit. Know the mind of God. Fulfil His purpose on the earth. Hallelujah!!!

PRAYERS
Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Help me to pray in the Spirit consistently, grow in spiritual sensitivity, understand Your mind and walk accurately in Your will in Jesus's name

    As we pray in the Spirit, our spirit becomes increasingly sensitive to God, our mind becomes increasingly aligned with His thoughts, and we walk with greater clarity in His will and purpose for our lives.
