SPEAK IN TONGUES II

"He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church." 1 Corinthians 14:4

Glory to God! Yesterday, we began discussing the importance of speaking in tongues. We established that speaking in tongues is for every believer who has received the Holy Spirit. It is a manifestation of the Spirit-life into which we have been brought. Speaking in tongues is therefore not something we should regard as strange or unnecessary. It is an important expression of our life in the Spirit. As believers, we must not only pray; we must learn to pray in the Spirit always and consistently. We discussed yesterday that when we speak in tongues, we speak unto God. Speaking in tongues is therefore a divine means of communicating with God in the Spirit. Today, we want to consider another powerful benefit of speaking in tongues: edification. Our opening scripture says, “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself.” To edify means to build up, strengthen, establish, or develop. Therefore, when you speak in tongues, you are building yourself spiritually. You are strengthening your inner man. Just as the physical body requires nourishment and exercise to remain strong, the human spirit also needs spiritual nourishment and exercise. The Word of God nourishes us, fellowship with God strengthens us, and praying in the Spirit is one of the ways we build ourselves up spiritually.

This is why Jude 20 says, “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.” Notice the connection: praying in the Holy Ghost builds you up. There is an edifying work that takes place within you as you consistently pray in the Spirit. There are times when you may feel spiritually weak, discouraged, confused, or overwhelmed. Sometimes you may not even know exactly what to pray. In such moments, you can withdraw from the noise around you and begin to pray in the Spirit. As you do, your spirit is strengthened and your consciousness of God becomes renewed. Speaking in tongues does not mean that every problem immediately disappears. Rather, it strengthens you so that you can face situations from the standpoint of the Spirit. You become strengthened within to respond to life according to God's Word rather than according to fear, pressure, or the limitations of your natural understanding. The strength we need to fulfil God's purposes is not merely physical or intellectual. It is strength in our inward man that comes from the Spirit. The more you give yourself to praying in the Spirit, the more you become accustomed to operating from your spirit rather than being controlled by your emotions and circumstances. You begin to respond differently because something is being strengthened within you. Speak in tongues. Build yourself up. Strengthen your inner man. Grow in spiritual sensitivity. Become stronger in faith. And as you are continually edified by the Spirit, you will be better equipped to fulfil God's purpose for your life and become a blessing to others. Speak in tongues. Build yourself. Strengthen your spirit. Live the life of the Spirit! Hallelujah!!!

  1. How consistent am I in praying in the Spirit, and what distractions or habits may be preventing me from building myself up spiritually?
  2. When I face pressure, discouragement, or uncertainty, do I respond from the strength of my spirit or from my emotions and circumstances?

PRAYERS
Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Strengthen me by Your Spirit in my inner man. Help me to pray in the Spirit consistently and to remain strong in faith in Jesus's name

    This stood out to me: "The more you give yourself to praying in the Spirit, the more you become accustomed to operating from your spirit rather than being controlled by your emotions and circumstances." If I want to rule of my emotions and circumstance, then I must be willing to yield more to the spirit and pray more in the spirit!
