INSTABILITY IN PURSUIT

"A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways." James 1:8

Glory to God! One of the greatest hindrances to progress is not always the absence of ability or opportunity; most times, it is instability in pursuit. A person may have a clear desire but lack the consistency required to pursue it. Instability occurs when our commitment keeps changing because our mind keeps shifting. We start today with enthusiasm, abandon it tomorrow because of difficulty, return to it when we feel motivated, and abandon it again when another opportunity appears. Such a pattern makes progress difficult because progress requires consistency. Our opening scripture describes the double-minded person as one who is “unstable in all his ways". The scripture captures someone whose mind is divided between different directions. There is a desire to move forward, but there is also hesitation, distraction, or competing affection pulling in another direction. Many times, the problem is not that we do not know what we want. The problem is that we have not settled what we are willing to pursue consistently. Consider a farmer who plants a seed today and digs it up tomorrow to check whether it is growing. He may genuinely desire a harvest, but his instability will prevent him from experiencing one. The seed requires time, patience, watering, cultivation, and protection. 

In the same way, the assignments God has placed in our hearts often require sustained pursuit before their fruits become evident. Sometimes we abandon a legitimate pursuit simply because the results are taking longer than expected. We begin to compare our progress with others, become discouraged by temporary setbacks, and start looking for something easier. But the fact that something is difficult does not necessarily mean that it is wrong. Some of the most valuable things in life are built through sustained obedience. “No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62). A person ploughing a field must keep his eyes in the direction of his work. Looking backward while ploughing affects the straightness and effectiveness of the work. A divided focus produces a distorted pursuit. We must therefore learn to distinguish between divine redirection and emotional distraction. There are times when God genuinely leads us into a new direction, and we must be sensitive enough to follow Him. But there are also times when we change direction simply because we became tired, impatient, offended, afraid, or attracted to something that appears easier. We cannot build anything significant by continually restarting. Consistency means that we remain committed to the destination even when we have to adjust the route. There may be seasons of learning, correction, refinement, and even temporary pauses, but our hearts remain established in the pursuit of God's will. A stable pursuit requires clarity, conviction, discipline, patience, and consistency. Refuse to be double-minded. Settle your hearts, focus your attention, discipline your actions, and remain faithful to what God has committed to you. You will surely win. Hallelujah!!!
