ASK FOR WISDOM

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." James 1:5

Glory to God! Wisdom is the ability to know what to do, how to do it, when to do it, and why it should be done. Wisdom enables us to make the right decisions and respond to the situations of life according to God's principles. Wisdom is not a choice for a believer; it is a necessity. Opportunities are mishandled and misplaced in the absence of wisdom. We live in a generation where information is everywhere, but wisdom is scarce. We can access information within seconds, yet information alone does not guarantee right decisions. There is a need for wisdom to navigate all that confronts us every day. Wisdom is needed in building sustainable relationships, enduring careers, successful family life and ministry or business. God wants us to live wisely in the midst of a complicated world. We must not be careless with our decisions. We must learn to discern seasons, recognise opportunities, and respond appropriately to people. When we walk in wisdom, we make better decisions. Wisdom helps us to look beyond what is immediately attractive and consider the consequences of our choices. A wise person does not simply ask, “Can I do this?” but also asks, “Should I do this?” Wisdom brings restraint, discernment and foresight. Wisdom helps us avoid unnecessary mistakes. Some mistakes are unavoidable because we are human, but wisdom helps us avoid mistakes that can be prevented through proper understanding and discernment. Wisdom teaches us to recognise danger before it destroys us.

The good news is that wisdom is available. God does not expect us to navigate life by human strength alone. So how do we get wisdom? First, we must ask for it. God is the source of wisdom, and He gives liberally without condemning us for asking. There will be moments when we genuinely do not know what to do. There will be decisions that are beyond our experience. There will be situations where human reasoning is insufficient. Ask for wisdom! Secondly, we must walk in the fear of God. The fear of God is the foundation of a wise life. Honouring God is wisdom. Wisdom begins when we stop making ourselves the final authority and allow God to direct our lives. Another way we can have the wisdom of God is by studying His Word. God's Word is one of the greatest sources of divine wisdom. The more we expose ourselves to God's Word, the more our thinking is shaped by God. We must also learn to follow and learn from wise people. Wisdom can also be received through godly counsel and instruction. “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise...” (Proverbs 13:20). We should not be too proud to learn. Sometimes, God answers our prayers for wisdom by bringing the right people into our lives. Therefore, let us not merely pray for more opportunities; let us pray for the wisdom to handle the opportunities we already have. Let us not only pray for increase; let us pray for the wisdom to manage increase. Wisdom is available. God is the source. The instruction is to ask. Hallelujah!!!

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. In what area of my life do I presently need to ask God for wisdom instead of relying on my own understanding?
  2. What can I do differently to give God's Word and godly counsel greater influence over my decisions?

PRAYERS
Father, thank You for Your Word; give us wisdom to discern rightly, decide wisely, and walk according to Your will in Jesus's name
