HOW TO STUDY THE WORD

"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15

Glory to God! To study means to give careful, deliberate, and sustained attention to something in order to understand, learn, and gain knowledge of it. Studying goes beyond merely looking at something; it involves intentional effort to understand the subject and to apply what has been learnt. As believers, one of the most important things we can study is the Word of God. The Bible is not a book that should only be read occasionally or opened when we need an answer. Apostle Paul instructed Timothy to “study to shew thyself approved unto God.” This shows us that there is a level of spiritual understanding that comes through diligent study. A believer who does not study the Word can easily become vulnerable to ignorance, confusion, and error. However, when we consistently study the Scriptures, we become grounded in truth and equipped to rightly discern and apply God's Word. Studying the Word is how we become acquainted with God's thoughts, understand His ways, and develop our faith. Here are practical ways to study the Word effectively: First, Schedule Time for the Word Every Day. One of the first requirements for effective Bible study is consistency. Anything that is important to us receives a place in our schedule. Just as we deliberately make time for work, meetings, or other responsibilities, we must deliberately make time for the Word. Do not leave your study of the Bible to chance. If you simply say, “I will study the Bible when I have time,” you may discover that you never really have time. Instead, schedule a definite period every day for the Word and treat that appointment seriously. 

Secondly, study the subject matter at a time. Another effective way to study the Bible is through topical study. Instead of reading random portions of Scripture without a particular direction, choose a subject and deliberately search the Scriptures concerning that subject. For example, you may decide to study faith. Find every important passage you can concerning faith. Study what Jesus taught about faith, what Paul taught about faith, what the Old Testament reveals about faith, and the examples of people who demonstrated faith. You could also study subjects such as prayer, healing, righteousness, wisdom, love, the Holy Spirit, prosperity, finance, wealth, stewardship, leadership, marriage, forgiveness, or spiritual growth. For example, if you choose to study finance, wealth, and prosperity, do not build your understanding merely on popular opinions. Search the Scriptures and discover everything the Bible teaches about work, diligence, generosity, stewardship, giving, contentment, increase, wealth, debt, and the proper attitude toward material possessions. As you read, write down what you are learning. Keep a notebook or journal and record the lessons, instructions, revelations, principles, questions, and applications that come to you from the Scriptures. A believer who gives himself continually to the Word will never remain the same. The more you study the Word, the more you know God; the more you know God, the more your mind is renewed; and the more your mind is renewed, the more your life is transformed. Study the Word. Know the Word. Believe the Word. Live the Word. Hallelujah!!!

Father, give me a deep hunger for Your Word and the discipline to study it diligently. Open my understanding, establish Your truth in my heart, and help me to live according to what I learn in Jesus's name
